Tiger Tales

 Introduction

Tigers (Panthera Tigris) are the biggest cats in the world. They live in jungles that are hot, wet and humid as well as forests that are icy cold. The five subspecies or different kinds of Tigers still alive today are Siberian, IndoChinese, South China, Bengal and Sumatran. They are an endangered species with only about 4870 to 7300 Tigers living in the wild.

It is thought that the modern Tiger originated in Northern Asia during the Pleistocene epoch, moving southwards and crossing the Himalayas, approximately 10,000 years ago. In the last 70 years 3 subspecies of Tigers have become extinct, these being the Bali, Javan and Caspian Tigers.

The Tiger is a secretive creature that is rarely to be seen in the wild. It wears a natural striped camouflage allowing it to move amongst the shadows of the forest silently and virtually unseen, making stalking of its prey easier.

The Tiger is one of the worlds most powerful hunters with claws, normally held up inside the paws, that flash to grip and tear flesh when needed. The teeth of the Tiger are razor-sharp, specially designed for tearing meat off the bone.
